Last.fm Discover Tag of the Week: Space Rock
This week, the Last.fm Originals Tag of the Week is: Space Rock. Continue reading to find out more about the progressive subgenre below. With over 2 million tracks to be explored on Last.fm Discover, your new favourite band could be just a few clicks away.
In the early 70s the term ‘Space Rock’ was used to refer to a small group of mostly British acts that often incorporated low, lengthy instrumental passages within songs and lyrics that could be considered borderline science fiction or astronomically themed.
Older acts such as Pink Floyd and Hawkwind were early pioneers, before an influx of space rock influenced acts started to emerge in the 1990s including the likes of Kyuss, The Flaming Lips, and Spiritualized.
First up on our speakers is ‘A Question’ by Kiwi rockers An Emerald City. Recorded with Liam Finn the free range instrumentation the six-piece have crafted is a fine demonstration of the genre.
Next on the playlist is ‘She Dies Screaming’ by Bradford, UK act Laboratory Noise. Don’t let the gruesome title put you off, the track itself is a joyous example of how to combine shoegaze influences and space rock perfectly.
And finally, we have ‘On The Marble Cliffs’ by Brooklyn trio Heavy Winged hitting hard through our speakers with an unearthly wall of noise. Sounding like the track has run through a million distortion pedals is every bit a compliment to the noisy act.
