Guitar Hero Tops The Hype Chart

Welcome to this week’s Hype Chart, looking at the artists rising fastest via your scrobbles. Every Wednesday we check out the top three, so read on to find out who’s on top this week.

3: Baauer – Hype Score: 868

It’s only February and already we have this year’s successor to the 2012 YouTube sensation that was Psy‘s “Gangnam Style”. Baauer’s inclusion in this week’s Hype Chart is entirely down to the virality of the track “Harlem Shake”, a track that had a frighteningly high unique listener count of 28,353 last week. “Harlem Shake”‘s success can largely be attributed to the craze of homemade videos to accompany the track, the best of which you can see below. Baauer was a relatively unknown trap DJ before the explosion of “Harlem Shake” – it’ll be interesting to see where his new-found exposure takes him.

2: Moods – Hype Score: 874

Netherlands-based but clearly taking in listeners from the world over, Moods’ track “Love Is Real” has propelled him to #2 in this week’s Hype Chart, with a total of 1,152 listeners checking it out. Tagged as drone and ambient by users, the beatsmaker combines hip hop beats, soft synth textures and smooth melodies – stream the EP Seasons on Bandcamp here.

1: Johnny Marr – Hype Score: 942

Featured in this week’s New Releases piece, Johnny Marr dropped his debut solo album The Messenger this week and fans have, predictably, been scrobbling it in huge numbers already – sending the legendary guitarist for The Smiths straight to the top of the Hype Chart. Having made his name in the 80’s as the writer of some of rock’s most memorable guitar riffs, a solo career was perhaps inevitable given the uncertainty surrounding a reunion for The Smiths ever happening. For now it seems his heart is firmly set on his own material and it looks like he has kicked off in the best possible way.
