Discovery of the Week: Mikky Ekko

Discovery of the Week is a series in which the staff within the Last.fm music team takes turns showcasing stuff that’s floating their respective boats, in the sure and certain hope that it will float yours too. This week, Last.fm’s Artist & Label Liaison Lewis Varrilly, aka lewisco_91, introduces his pick of the moment – Mikky Ekko.

A name surely to be on everyone’s lips within the new year is Louisiana-born Mikky Ekko. The relatively unknown popster has recently made large strides with his beautifully crafted atmospheric indie-pop. In 2009 and 2010 he released two EP’s titled ‘Strange Fruit‘ and ‘Reds‘, but it’s the quality of his recent work that has really caught the attention of the music world, so much so that he features on Rihanna‘s new album ‘Unapologetic‘ alongside notable guests including Eminem and Chris Brown.

Ekko, who recently signed to RCA, is currently working on his debut LP with producers including hip-hop wunderkid Clams Casino, TV On The Radio’s Dave Sitek, and producer of Adele’s ’21′, Paul Epworth. With only 10,267 listeners to his name of Last.fm and 86,476 scrobbles, expect to see a sharp increase in the coming months.
