The Current Sounds of DJ Fresh
We were lucky enough to sit down with DJ Fresh at Parklife Festival last weekend to have a chat about what he is currently enjoying the most in the world of music. Fans who are awaiting the third studio album from the English dubstep/drum and bass DJ are still scrobbling tracks from 2010′s Kryptonite in huge numbers. The album has been scrobbled 745,635 times, with tracks such as “Golddust” scrobbled 202,147 times alone – making it his most popular track. Below he talks about five acts he has been listening to a lot lately and how they inspire him in his own music.
Andy C
“He’s one of the main reasons I got into drum and bass and jungle in the first place. Incredible DJ, makes incredible tunes. Hasn’t been making many recently but I hear he’s back in the studio so I’m really excited about that. His mixing and the whole double drop thing he does is brilliant. He’s just a legend in drum and bass – so he’s definitely right up there.”
Sub Focus
“Just because we’re both quite similar in terms of our musical influences and I really dig his music. We kinda have a joint appreciation of each other’s stuff. We’re both influenced by acts like Daft Punk and some indie bands as well. I always find his music really interesting to listen to when I get sent it.”
Fleet Foxes
“Totally out of the box for me – a completely different style. They wrote a song on their new album called ‘Helplessness Blues’. It’s got a line that says “I grew up believing I was somehow unique, like a snowflake, distinct amongst snowflakes, unique in each way you can see. But now after some thinking I’d rather be a functioning cog in a great big machinery serving something beyond me”. I think it’s such an amazing line and I really think their songwriting is incredible – it’s really inspiring. You don’t necessarily get their music on first listen (well I certainly didn’t) but then after you’ve listened to the tracks a few times they really get stuck in your head due to the interesting arrangements. I just think they’re an incredible band.”
Dizzee Rascal
“Playing the Main Stage today at Parklife the same time as me so we’re gonna be battling it out against eachother with power – or our own versions of it! He’s definitely an inspiration to me in the sense that he has this force in British music where he spearheads it around the globe and does really unique things in dance music such as rapping over it. Obviously I’ve just collaborated with him as well so he has to go in here!”
Buraka Som Sistema
“They’re on before me tonight. Portugese guys who make really interesting music somewhere between house and dubstep, with a kind of Brazilian twist to it with lots of percussion and weird sounds. It’s just really refreshing to listen to in relation to all the dubstep and stuff that’s out there right now.”
