Tuesday night (9/9) we were graciously invited out to the illustrious Baby’s Allright in Brooklyn to take part in the release of Lera Lynn’s sophomore full-length LP The Avenues.
The Houston-born, Georgia-bred, Nashville-residing singer songwriter has a real special something-something about her… historically hard to truly pigeonhole genre-wise since her 2011 debut Have You Met Lera Lynn, there is an element of ‘sexy sophistication’ to what would contemporarily be labeled as alt-country; however when you really get down to the brass tacks-> her influences stemming from the likes of Patsy Cline & Conway Twitty bring an authenticism that hearkens towards the truly more traditional, if not ‘noir’ category of country music with a smattering of western swing, pop, americana and jazz at it’s roots. I guess what I am trying to say is it is rich and delicious music that will really ‘stick to your ribs’.
Following the release of the Lying in the Sun EP in March, which in Lera’s own words was a representation of her frustrations merging art & business, The Avenues was produced by Joshua Grange at Sheryl Crow‘s studio in a decidedly sincere effort to take a more focused and professional approach to album development as opposed to her piecemealed albeit still tender and charming prior work.
The record itself is a deeply personal journey for Lera, dealing with topics of estrangement, addiction & loss combined with some good old fashioned love songs to which Lera responds “what else do you write about?”. Her September 9th album release show featured openers Mark Rogers & Mary Byrne and Adam Faucett and brought the right mix of casual vibe and old staples from her repertoire, while obviously heavily favoring the new songs.
