The groundwork has been set, and 2012 just might be the year A Silent Film breakthrough in the U.S. with their sophomore album Sand & Snow. From Oxford, England, Rob Stevenson, Karl Bareham, Ali Hussain and Spencer Walker have made an album that goes to another level when played live. In our NYC studio recently the guys took time out to play three new songs and dipped into the debut for the song that started the story in the states.
A Silent Film – Queen Of A Sad Land
One of the last songs done for the album. Rob refused to demo it, only playing it acoustically one day before they recorded it at Sonic Ranch Studios in El Paso, TX. The music was tracked live and vocals added later in the evening.
A Silent Film – Harbour Lights
Rob started this one off as a piano demo. Eventually Karl, Rob and Spence played a “loud” version and changed the song around.
A Silent Film – You Will Leave A Mark
From the debut album The City That Sleeps, this gave the band their first exposure on American radio. According to Karl, making this song was a painful process. There were just over a dozen versions recorded, and they were ready to give up on it. Then Rob played “that piano riff” and fifteen minutes later, a song was born. Rob plays this one solo for us in the session. It is their all-time most scrobbled track.
