Say Anything leader and mastermind Max Bemis takes us through a few phases of the band’s musical career in this four-song session. The new album Anarchy, My Dear, the first on Equal Vision Records, brings back Tim O’Heir to handle production. Max knew this was going to be a special record pretty much from the beginning while working on the album’s opening track “Burn A Miracle”. On a side note, since Max’s wife Sherri DuPree of the band Eisley was with him on this day, it was only fitting that we ask if they would make a record together in the future. (Sherri adds vocals to a handful of songs on Anarchy, My Dear). Max was happy to say that they have started a side-project called Perma, and have started the writing process for a full-length next year with a tour to follow. Sherri also told us that we can look forward to a new Eisley record next year as well, and the release of a 7″ vinyl live single out next week. And that’s not the only stuff Max will be working on. Look for a new release from Max Bemis And The Painfuls Splits this fall and perhaps a new Two Tongues release in the next few years! Oh yeah, there’s also his label, Rory Records, which is an imprint under Equal Vision. It includes his first signing, recent tour-mates, TALLHART.
Max Bemis of Say Anything – Spores
His favorite song on the album and probably the darkest he’s ever written. It’s about being in a really horrible relationship.
Max Bemis of Say Anything – Hate Everyone
Annoyed with all the other people in the world?
And of all these angry people in the world
I am the angriest boy
Written at the tail-end of the horrible relationship that was the topic of the song “Spores”. Written in England while on tour, two or three months out of the relationship. It was usually dark and rainy and he was depressively sleeping eighteen to twenty hours a day, only waking to play a show. Despite loving everyone else around him, at the time of writing it he hated life, hated everyone involved in his life and it was a horrendous experience. But this was a turning point for Max personally, as from then on he started a journey to better himself and be happy.
Max Bemis of Say Anything – Woe
The key-track from the album …Is A Real Boy, it’s one of the songs he’s played the most in his life. He remembers when he wrote it it was the song he felt was a step up lyrically and musically for the band. He wanted to impress and blow away his manager at the time and make him think that the band was “still cool”.
