The internet (and by extension the world, I suppose) is abuzz with news of Phoenix‘s new album, Bankrupt! (Out April 22nd). According to the band, it is a new development in their sound entirely, diverging from the accessible indie pop sound for which they’re known in favor of a more experimental path. The updated, less-poppy sound of Bankrupt! is also, ironically, aided by the use of the mixing board that was used by Michael Jackson on Thriller, which the band found for sale online.
“We bought Michael Jackson’s mixing board, just because it was on eBay. It was there. And we could get it.”
-Thomas
Famously cryptic and oblique, Phoenix’s lyrics take another plunge into the non-sequitur for this album. This is done by design, they say. They appreciate the interpretations of lyrics just as much – if not more – than the original meaning behind them. Their words are open for analysis and should be made your own.
“[Someone said the lyrics] felt like ‘Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles’; it doesn’t make any sense. But they exist, and you’re happy they exist.”
“Once the album is done, the songs have a life you can’t predict.”
-Thomas
Why you keep pretending that you wanna let go?
Do. Do you wanna let go?

The band is planning a big tour including festival dates such as Coachella in support of Bankrupt! so keep an eye out. The band says they’ve got some surprises in store…
“It’s a surprise, even for us… We were talking about it just before meeting you!”
-Chris
