The Last Word: BPM Night

After a successful 2014 party season the crew from BPM Night (co-founders Jason Scott, Mess Kid, NiRE, BOY/FRIEND, & 10Deep Clothing) give Last.fm the full scoop on the event series and give us a look forward to 2015

In the latest installment of our ongoing interview series The Last Word:  We speak with a number of individuals involved in the experimental pop-up dance party series c/o Betteryet, best known as BPM LWR LVL (BPM Night, Lower Level).

Held every other saturday throughout the summer in the basement of the Tribeca Grand, the event is now closing out its 4th season with DJ sets from Lee Bannon, Ghouls, J Heat, and several more.  Last.fm co-sponsors the event series, and the Originals producers spoke with co-founders Jason Scott of BETTERYET and DJ Mess Kid, as well as comments from mainstay BOY/FRIEND, newcomer DJ NiRE & Kei Henderson of 10 Deep Clothing who also sponsor the event.

Jason Scott’s stark passion for music derives from his singer/songwriter/producer roots. Raised in a Baptist church choir and later attending the ‘Fame school’, LaGuardia Arts, the pursuit of “the next sound” became his driving force. The Queens, NY native has promoted and hosted raw talent at their inception such as Kid Cudi, Theophilus London, Jesse Marco,Brenmar, and Fat Tony.  Through extensive experience as an independent A&R, publicist, booking agent, and manager to musicians, Jason Scott has worked with several major brands in event management such as Live For The Funk (LFTF).  Jason is also proficient at maintaining his DJ skills, spinning alongside SBTRKT, Ryan Hemsworth, Ben UFO, Sango, Dubbel Dutch, Slava and Alex Pasternak of Lemonade.

Everyone we spoke to essentially had simialr things to say: This party is something special.  It’s a hybrid event, mixing underground/undiscovered music with a swaggy high-end venue… the best of both worlds.

It’s Entertainment meets education – Jason Scott

Roping together familiarity & discovery is not an easy task, but the appeal is built upon the shoulders of DJ Mess Kid who brings the limit pushing, progressive and eclectic aura to BPM LWR LVL.  NiRE points out that this is also a playground for producers; a place where you as an artist can come in, cut loose, show everyone what you can bring to the table and let them interpret it.  From the dance/dub/hip-hop, to BOY/FRIEND (a.k.a. Asian Gosling) grabbing the mic and going all R. Kelly on the floor.  Four years strong and we are all in high anticipation for what the 5th year anniversary will bring.

RSVP as long as you’re not a douchebag, the doors are open to folks of all walks.
