The Last Word: Halsey on her debut full length 'Badlands'

Halsey gives the low down on her break into the music industry, creating a fictional universe in her head to birth songs from, and how it all led to the creation of her record 'Badlands'

New Jersey’s Halsey – the (barely) 20 year old songstress is on the rise.  Jumping in the past couple of months up to 42k listeners with a sharply climbing tally of 265k+ scrobbles.  Following the release of her Autumn 2014 EP Room 93, the collection of recordings that not only introduced us all to her “don’t give a f***” attitude embodied in the crisp, raspy vocal lines chronicling an estranged life within hotels… Halsey tells last.fm about her forthcoming full length: Badlands.

Describing the concept as a sort of “isolated dystopian Sin-City” constructed in her head, what it amounts to is a reflection of the singers introduction to the tempting, tantalizing and often times devastating realities of the music industry.  Halsey herself has battled with bi-polar disorder and loneliness over time, so the coming-to-terms with the business-end of what she described as “monetizing her passion” was a major challenge.  The album represents her coming-of-age saga at the finish line – one that flourishes more in the LP format than the EP.  Halsey is not shy about divulging into her history and career – proud of her upbringing in a diverse household that’d spin records from 2pac to The Notorious B.I.G. to Nirvana to Alanis Morissette.  Halsey believes hers (and others) music instills the ideology of the diversification of pop culture, and she built this fictional universe of the Badlands so that she could better convey how she thinks; no better representation of this than by her song ‘New Americana’
