Bedřich Smetana’s Má Vlast, 2. Vltava has had me shocked hearing the original for the very first time. Really love the melodic memorable melodies. Thank you Bernard Haitink and Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra (as well as the sound engineers) for such an amazing recording! https://open.spotify.com/track/7bngI2jTKQVGRVF03Vz557?si=40a47c58fa9045f3

Takže tu Moldau bych klidně i odpustil..

All this arguing over Vltava- I think the rest of Ma Vlast is better- especially z ceskych lulu a haju. Now I'm glad that's translated in the track name because I wouldn't have a clue what it meant but I would still try to refer to the piece as that because that is what Smetana wrote it to be named and I think the Czech actually sounds quite cool to be honest. I think the reason we say "Clair de Lune" but "Ride of the Valkyries" is because we English are not famed for our good pronunciation and while "Clair de Lune is easy enough, "Reit des Walkuers" is a bit of a mouthful. I think pieces that are named (symphonic poems for example) should retain their original name but while French was considered fashionable for a long period in the English speaking world, Czech and German, and other such languages, have unfortunately not. Rachmaninov would have been a lot less popular had all his works been given Russian titles in America. It's a shame, but nothing to do with nationalism.
