Unheard is Hozier’s fifth EP following his 2023 third studio album, Unreal Unearth. The tracks, like his third studio album, draw inspiration from Dante Alighieri’s Inferno, the initial part of his 14th-century masterpiece, Divine Comedy, and fit into the circles of gluttony, limbo, violence, and the outward ‘ascent’ respectively. They were originally intended for inclusion on Unreal Unearth but did not make the final cut for various reasons as stated by the artist in a newsletter to his fans. Hozier first teased the release of the EP on February 20, 2024 during an interview with El Camino, a Mexican radio station, while he was on the Mexican leg of his Unreal Unearth tour. The release date was confirmed on March 6, 2024, during an interview with Chris Black and Jon Stewart for their podcast How Long Gone episode 614. The final tracklist was confirmed via that artist’s social accounts and a newsletter sent to his fans.
