Biography

Kelly Moran, b. 1988, is a composer, performer, improviser, sound designer and multimedia artist from Long Island, New York. She completed her undergraduate degree in Performing Arts Technology at the University of Michigan-Ann Arbor where she studied piano with Stephen Rush and Louis Nagel and composition with Bright Sheng and Erik Santos. Kelly was granted a fellowship to study Integrated Composition, Improvisation and Technology at the University of California-Irvine, where she currently resides. She is one of the winners of the 2009 New Music On the Block Competition for her song "jeu de nuage fumé" to be released later this year on iTunes through the University of Michigan's Block M record label. As a pianist, Kelly has given multiple recitals of contemporary piano repertoire specializing in works by John Cage, John Adams, George Crumb, Henry Cowell and Philip Glass. An interest in composition for dancers has propelled numerous collaborations, most recently for the show "Click, Flash, Cut" at the University of Michigan Museum of Art. Her debut album, Microcosms, was released in 2010.

Her 2018 album "Ultraviolet" was described by Philip Sherburne's review in Pitchfork as "The prepared-piano specialist abandons the meticulous compositions of her previous albums, editing down improvisations and bejeweling them with layers of synthesizers and effects."
