I'm starting a bit of a dive into 'alt country' as a sub-genre (I feel like a lot of interesting groups and songs get overlooked under the banner of 'everything but country' mantra... which is easy enough to do, so I'm not judging) and a lot of signs have pointed to him as a good place to start looking into things. Copperhead Road as a song absolutely does slap.

My dad likes alt country, he listens to Steve Earle, John Prine, Lucinda Williams Emmylou Harris Okkervil River & Wilco. Steve also had a son named Justin Townes Earle but he died a few years back unfortunately

Just got home from seeing Steve and the Dukes. It was one of the greatest shows I've seen in my life.

"I don't know what it is. Either I'm on a better lyrical move, or I have less self consciousness. I don't really know what's happening, but whatever it is, I'm just kind of going with it." - When we spoke with Kristian Bush, he had just released his debut solo single, "Love or Money," which he wrote with Matt Thiessen of Relient K. It took them less than 45 minutes, and it sounds like there is a whole lot more to come from Bush, who also talks to us about the Sugarland tracks "Stay," "It Happens," "Already Gone," "Joey" and "Steve Earle," which the country legend did not take very kindly to: http://www.songfacts.com/blog/interviews/kristian_bush_of_sugarland/

What a terribly underrated artist. One of these days, alt-country is going to really catch on, and when it does, Steve Earle's music will finally get the recognition it deserves.

Quick story: working sound at local venue, I was shitfaced and decided to bring Mr. Earle a beer . . . manager kicked me out; Steve looked at me and shook his head and covered his face. I didn't realize he'd been sober 12 years at the time. I was so embarrassed . . . lost my job . . . . Appropriately, I got sober soon after; been sober 3 1/2 years now. I think the humiliation and lost opportunity to meet Mr. Earle made me realize what an ass I was being. Sorry Steve. I get it now.
